Is there any chance this works if you run “make distclean” and then rerun the configure script? Maybe it got confused because of the originally-missing libxext-dev package? I retried configure and make on a fresh copy of the source tree, so yeah!

I just installed Linux Mint 15 x64 and installed the following packages: sudo apt-get install dh-autoreconf libasound2-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libpulse-dev libudev-dev libdbus-1-dev libx11-dev libxcursor-dev libxext-dev libxi-dev libxinerama-dev libxrandr-dev libxss-dev libxt-dev libxxf86vm-dev I then built SDL and created a.deb for Linux Mint with no problems.
