I had an issue with my vehicle and I was tired of checking with the local automotive store for the code and clearing it when I was running some tests. Got the Actron and saved a lot of time driving back and forth, waiting for help at the store, etc. Now I can check whenever I want, at home, at the gas station, help a friend or family member out. The Actron works well, might be a bit hard to see in direct sunlight, just change the angle, the buttons feel good, not mushy, good response, I can't complain about the speed of the unit and the screen page changes. This is the only one I have extensive use with, I can't say if it is fast, slow, etc.
The speed is adequate for me, personnally. If you own a few cars or deal with a few and some older that will then to exhibit issues with codes, I highly recommend owning an auto scanner, it will save a lot of time and frustration. The instructions are pretty clear and easy to follow. This tool helped me pass safety/emissions (My car has a faulty O2 sensor which causes the check engine light to come on periodically. I was stupid and put premium gasoline in my car for the first year. I later found out that premium gas is notorious for screwing sensors up- don't use it unless your car is turbo-charged or the manufacture specifies using premium grade gasoline. Lo and behold, my sensors started bugging out. But i digress.). This scanner does get stuck in your car though.
I read the other reviews stating this and I thought it wouldn't happen to me. The VERY FIRST TIME I plugged it in, it snapped into place and was dam near impossible to get off. I seriously almost broke my car's port trying to get it out. When you first get it out of the box, you'll notice a square hole in the port end. The thin piece of plastic on the top of the square hole is what holds it into your car's port. It is also the reason it gets stuck in your car.
After I finally got it out, I cut that piece out so it's a U shape instead of a square. Now it doesn't stay in. I have to hold it tightly to get it to read.
Great aid if your 'service engine' light ever comes on, the updating software tool is kind of a pain to download, but it has nothing to do with the actual hardware, it's the slow dedicated server Actron uses, I downloaded it really early in the morning and it was a lot faster and problem free. If I could go back in time I would have just cut a slit in the middle of that top plastic piece instead of cutting it completely out. That way it would still click into place, but would still be easier to get off. I'm not sure how AutoZone does it, because I'm pretty sure they use this same reader but it doesn't get stuck when they plug it in. I'll probably just glue a piece of plastic on so it stays hooked on better.
Would i make this purchase again? Yes, but I would split that top piece instead of cutting it completely out. And I would do that BEFORE trying it out on my car for the first time. With all of the cars being at least 70-80% computer operated it is very hard to diagnose a check engine light.
I didnt want to spent alot of money one one but I didn't want a piece of crap either. This scanner is very easy to use and understand. A week after I had got it I was driving my car making a turn through a major intersection and it died with the check engine light on.
I had to no clue what it was. It was turning over, I had fuel pressure and spark. I plugged in my scanner and it read a cam shaft position sensor fault code. It started after fifteen minutes and I got it home as soon as possible. I called the parts store and a $18 part (Basically a magnet) caused my car to shut down. I went and got the part and installed it with in a hour.
I cant imagine how much a shop would have charged!! Parts mark up, technician fee, diagnostic fee.$300-500 I would guess. Very good investment if you are wanting to save money and not take it to a shop and get ripped off. What a great investment for the home mechanic! It gives you: diagnostic codes with descriptions, emmessions system status for those times you have to smog your car & are not sure if it will pass, live data when it's hooked up to a running car (coolant temp., RPMs, load pressure on your ABS system, which I don't know how to process yet, but it's good to know I have this type of data) & more. I hooked it up to my friend's 02 Acura RSX and right away got codes and was able to clear them and turn the check engine light (CEL) off as it was nothing serious, like in my situation.
I hooked it up to my 06 Civic and did the same. I got code P0128 with this description: 'Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)'. Did a bit of research online and found out that this doesn't affect the drivability of my car and that the coolant thermostat most likely needs to be replaced. Read a bit more and it could also just be a low coolant level. I now have answers and knowledge, thanks to this little device. And if you can't fix it yourself, the scanner comes with the added benefit of you not getting ripped off at the local mechanic shop because you'll know exactly what is wrong with your car.
Knowledge is power. Gave it four stars because the chord exposes you to lead (it has a little warning tag). Get rid of the lead and it's a 5. If you just want to check what is the code and reset code, this is above your requirement. If you want more information on the vehicle, this is the best tool to get. It has lot's of information displayed, easy to use, no battery required.
Confirmed it works with my 2002 Corolla CE, 2007 RAV4 AWD, and 2008 Odyssey EX-L. FYI: I also have the ODBLink SX ($50), USB to computer ODB II scanner.
They work the same and can give you similar information. But the USB device is much more bulky to use, as you need a laptop/PC. The USB device have one ability which this can not do, is the ability to log the live data and save to a file. Will have to go back to the USB device for that.
Actron also have higher models which will log data and upload to PC, and work with OBD I vehicles, but they only save one set of data until you upload to PC (not convenient), and they cost a whole lot more. I have seen some better ones, but i bought this for my Mechanic boyfriend and he loves it. It can remove the engine light which is a nice feature i hear b/c if you try to fix/adjust something and then remove the light its nice to see if it pops back on letting you know the problem is still there. Also it gives you codes and for the most part defenitions too so you are not googleing that the codes mean lol.It comes in a nice hard case with instructions and its nice b/c it fits newer cars and a lot of older cars as well. I LOVE that it has a backlight on it! Watch out for that b/c you will find that sometimes you (or family and friends) will want their car scanned when its dark outside and i understand that the car lights will be on but its makes a big differnace to me that the screen lights up! It was a specific feature i know i looked for when buying!
This tool can pay for itself the FIRST time it allows you to fix a problem in your driveway instead of taking the car to a mechanic. Now, I think HIGHLY of my local mechanic's shop - they do great work & charge modestly for their considerable expertise. The problem is, you pay for that expertise whether it's needed or not for a particular repair.
If you can change a headlight bulb, then you have the right skills to make other simple fixes, too (like sensor replacement). So, save yourself some money by getting this tool. Sure - there are other ways to get the info. Some parts stores will read the code for you, but if you're troubleshooting or need to try something & reset the code, then they won't all do that, plus it's pretty inconvenient schlepping back & forth to the store. Also - there are cheaper scanners, too, but this one is INTUITIVE. If you're doing some of your own maintenance (or occasionally helping friends), then you want a device with reasonable capabilities that doesn't require reading arcane instructions just to use the basic functions.
THIS is that tool. Finally, - if you're a mechanic working out of your house, then yes, there are more capable machines, too, but that's a business & you'll not mind spending a whole lot more than the $100 (or so) this thing costs. I used this to my two car. On a Mercedes E320 when the check engine light came on. It say's the 'Idle Control Valve' is bad.
To get fix by the dealer it will cost $350.00. I bought an Idler Control Valve for $50.00 and replace the bad one and that already pay for the OBDII scan tools.
I also use it on my BMW X3. The tool read that #2 cylinder is misfiring that the X3 do not have the full power. BMW dealer estimate to fix the problem for $375.00. I bought 6 Bosch spark plug and replace all six, and bingo the problem was fix for $60.00.
Engine light came on again on the BMW X3, I put the OBDII, and says the water pump is bad. And telling me to replace right away. I purchase electric water and thermostat from Amazon and install it on my BMW X3. Turn off the warning light from the OBDII Scan Tool, and perfect the problem is fix for less than $500.00 on parts. The dealer will do it for $1,650.00 dollars which is about a 4 hour work. This OBII Scan Tool is already worth what I pay for about ten times the price of the OBDII. I highly recommend this tool to anybody want to save a lot of money to do the repair yourself.
The scan tool will tell you exactly what needed to be done. I have had a similar experience to that of other user's who had connection problems. I downloaded the Actron Scanning Suite software and tried to update the tool. This is a mistake - I would highly recommend you do not load this software on your PC. It does not work properly with Win XP (unsigned drivers, for one). The software wound up permanently disabling my scanner.

The people at Actron are no help - their only advice was to return the unit now that the Scanning Suite software had disabled the device. The software is essentially poorly written from both a user interface and a hardware connection point of view - terrible systems engineering here. It's like something written in the mid-1980's by beginning programmers. I'll try again using the scanner but will.never. try to use this software again.
I suspect Actron is well aware of this weakness but doesn't know how to fix the problem - surprising ineptitude for such a large company. Of course, Amazon is great with their return policy. 1/25/2014 Update: Apparently the software has now been fixed; this is great news since it is an otherwise very nice product. As one reviewer notes below, be sure to get the Scanning Suite software of at least version 4.
I changed the original rating to be at least 4 stars now since the software was the main reason for a negative response. Having used this scanner for more than two years, it has always worked well for me reading it directly from the device display.
